Recently, Mercedes-Benz and MasterCard have jointly launched in-vehicle payment through in-vehicle fingerprint sensors, which will be put into use in more than 3,600 service stations in Germany. Drivers of some brands of vehicles will be able to choose to pay the fuel cost directly from their cars, without entering a PIN code or authenticating through mobile devices, so that the in-vehicle experience can be enhanced by using convenient payment methods.
When the driver arrives at one of the more than 3,600 service stations connected to this new platform and turns off the engine, the Mercedes me Fuel & Pay service will be automatically started. Before refueling, the system will calculate the maximum charge according to the current fuel price and fuel tank level. Once it is started, the driver only needs to select the pump. Payment will be authorized by fingerprint. Once the driver’s fingerprint is recognized, the vehicle can refuel and the final bill will be deducted from MasterCard. This payment process does not need to go to the checkout, and the invoice will be sent to the customer by email.
In order to launch this service, MasterCard released a study conducted by GfK, a German market research company, which showed that about half of young people aged 18 to 39 would order and pay for services or products directly through the digital screen of the car, and 60% of them chose to pay for fuel or charging directly from the car.
